2022 S2 Round 1 Thunder Results
Trahair wins a sizzler in Texas!!
The 1st race of the ANZCAR Thunder season 2 2022 would head to Texas Motor Speedway.
Jaiden Russell would take the pole position from Ryan Jones, with Josh Michelmore and Hamish Gallagher taking out the 2nd row starting spots. Russell would charge out early leading from Douglas, Michelmore and Gallagher. Russell showing his race speed early and would go onto lead 62 laps in total.
An early caution at lap 14 for a single car spin would see the field pit for tires and fuel. However, Steven Williams would take fuel only to save a set of tires for later cautions if needed.
Michelmore would take over the lead for this green flag run leading from Russell and Gallagher
The next caution would really start to see a difference in strategies throughout the field. Garry Wellman leading a pack of 8 cars onto pit road to for fresh tires and fuel.
This would see them make big moves up the field once it went green with the fresh tires paying off in a 36-lap green flag run.
Russell would take over the lead on lap 55 from Michelmore holding it until the caution on lap 63.
During this run Luke Trahair would work his way up to 6th having started this run in 26th after pitting for tires at the lap 24 caution. The field would take the chance to pit for fuel and tiers to make it home from the lap 63 caution.
A short run would follow with a quick caution as the aggression levels wound up but this time no takers for pit road. Russell still leading from Gallagher, Michelmore and Michael Scurlock.
A late caution at lap 93 would see a take em if you got em for tires. If you had a set of tires left, you came into the pits to get them for a short run to the finish.
Luke Trahair, Noddy Tompkins and Phil Otto would take over the top 3 positions, not pitting as they had no tires left to take. Ryan Jones and Justin Whitcher would take 2 tires only at this pit stop to leapfrog the other leading cars taking 4 tires making for a good mix on the race restart.
The race would restart with 2 laps to run however a quick caution would see the race go into a green, white checker finish. Aggression levels high and a mix of old and fresh tires through out the front of the field.
Sadly the racing finish would be anti-climactic as a missed gear shift on the restart would see the caution come out immediately for a wreck earning Luke Trahair the win, Ryan Jones the 2nd spot and Noddy Tompkins 3rd.
Impressive run for the top 3 but an extra shout out to Ryan Jones. Qualified 2nd , got disconnected from the server at the start of the race so ended up starting the race 2 laps down, waited for the 2 lucky dogs to get back on the lead lap and then a great call for a 2 tire stop late to finish strong in 2nd spot with a big chance to get the win if the race stayed green.
