2022 S2 Round 3 Thunder Results
The Thunder roars through the streets of the motor city!!
This week the ANZCAR Thunder series would travel to the birthplace of the modern automobile Detroit for the AJD Australia 60 @ Belle Isle!
The first ANZCAR race to be held on a street circuit I believe and chosen to fill in the gap of the real-life equivalent race which is at Portland this year.
27 cars rolled onto the starting grid for this one with Hamish Gallagher taking pole position from Ryan Jones. Edward Foster and Wade Sheedy would make up the 2nd row and Luke Trahair starting in 5th.
The top 5 spots separated in lap time by 0.779 of a second.
The race got off to a good clean start with plenty of side-by-side action. Edward Foster would quickly take over the lead on lap 1 and holding onto it till Wade Sheedy would make the pass for the lead on lap 2.
The top 6 cars running close in the early laps. At the back of the pack Andrew Dyson and Neil Pearson who had both elected to not qualify were cutting their way through the pack.
Sheedy would open a good gap on 2nd place, but this looked to have come at the expense of the tires with Foster able to pass for the lead again on lap 9 as Sheedy started to run wide on some corners. Sheedy would start falling back into the grasp of the following cars as Jones in 2nd and Trahair in 3rd would get by on the next lap.
Jones would hound the back of Foster until a wheel spin off a corner would allow Dyson to get past for 2nd place.
A handful of cars would opt to pit to grab fresh tires to, but the bulk of the field would stay out as drivers could make it home on a no stop strategy.
Riley Curtis would be the 1st of the 1 stop finishers in 11th spot which could’ve been 8th spot if not for an unfortunate incident 2 laps from the end of the race not of his doing.
From lap 16 onwards Dyson would hound the back of Foster in a good battle to the end. Dyson getting the move done on the last lap to take the win. As Foster would later say “it was a bit like the Lion playing with his food before finishing it”
Well a watch of the broadcast on this one as it was a great race with action throughout the field, clean racing action and a few unfortunate incidents costing some drivers good finishes.
