2022 S2 Round 6 Thunder Results
“Nah this is ridiculous boys! I cannot race” Josh Michelmore race 300 Quote 😊
The ANZCAR Thunder series would roll into Atlanta for the 2nd time this year for what ended up being a somewhat interesting race.
Ryan Jones would grab the pole position with a lap time of 31.313 followed closely by Jason Martin (31.326) making a rare Thunder series appearance. Andrew Dyson (31.352), Steven Williams (31.358), Neil Pearson (31.362) and Hamish Gallagher (31.370) would make up the top 6 starting positions.
Martin would power around the outside to take over the lead on lap 1 from Jones only losing the lead on lap 47 when Dyson would take over. The bulk of the field would slot in single file looking to manage their cars and tires on a track that is known for being hard on the right-side tires.
With the car able to do around 57 laps on a full tank most drivers would be looking to split the 97-lap race roughly in half. A few cars would opt to try a 2-stop strategy pitting around lap 34 and 68.
With the lap time drop off being around 1.5 seconds to 2 seconds it would’ve been interesting to see how this would play out over 97 laps had it gone full distance.
The racing was tight throughout the field with 9 seconds covering the top 10 after 35 laps going to show how close the field was running. As the race went on the major issue of the night would start creeping up on all the drivers.
That issue being that the sun had set and the track although having light towers in place does not having working lights for the track.
So as the light started to fade there started to be a few close misses as sometimes drivers couldn’t see a car until it was right on them.
The bulk of the field would pit around lap 50 to grab tires and fuel not really knowing if the little amount of light would last.
Ryan Jones would pit on lap 46 for his fresh tires and fuel in what ended up being a race winning move. Using the under-cut Jones was able to move up to the front of the field through the green flag pit stop cycle taking over the lead on lap 57.
On lap 72 suddenly the night sky would go pitch black resulting in the race being called at this point.
As the race had run over the 50% min distance required to be classified the running order at 72 is the final standings.
Have to say that was a great job from all the drivers for there to be no cautions, racing 72 laps in fading light.
The 1st caution was not until it went absolute pitch black.
Certainly, a memorable 300th Official ANZCAR start for Josh Michelmore!!
Results as at Lap 72 when it went pitch black:
1st Ryan Jones
2nd Luke Trahair
3rd Hamish Gallagher
4th Andrew Dyson
5th Ruben Phelps
Incidents:
Didn’t see any so none.
Other Notes:
Nothing to see here either.
Strongly recommend watching the broadcast back on this one as its pretty funny watching and hearing the chaos unfold.
