2022 S3 Round 10 Thunder Results
“aH tHaT’s sHoRt TrAcK rAcInG!!”
Round 10 of the ANZCAR Thunder Series 3 2022 would see the series head to the Iowa for 150 short track racing laps.
Qualifying would see Hamish Gallagher top the charts followed by Luke Trahair and Lachlan Urquijo who ran identical lap times for 2nd and 3rd. Tom Neil and Jason Martin rounding out the top 5 positions.
From the outset it looked like 2 pit stops would be needed to make the race distance so most drivers would be going flat out straight away. A few drivers would sit back and let the battle rage on inside the top 10 but for the most part the field was running quiet looking after their equipment. Gallagher would build a big gap to Urquijo and Trahair early on.
A 41 lap green flag run to start the race off then we would see all cars take the opportunity to grab fresh tires and top up with fuel at the caution. Gallagher would lead out from the restart with Marin running in 2nd. The action would pick up straight away from here till the end with more aggressive moves being made. Another caution would quickly come out on lap 48. A handful of cars opting to top up fuel here.
The next restart would see a nice 3 wide send from Rueben Phelps to move from 5th to 3rd in one corner. Martin would stalk down Gallagher and get the pass done to take over the race lead on lap 69 hehe.
All cars would take the chance here to pit again for fresh tires and be right on the point of being able to make it home from here. Quick bursts of racing action would be the go from here with another caution on lap 93 seeing some leading cars throwing big dummies on the entrance to pit road but all staying out. The running order being Martin, Gallagher and Andrew Dyson who had worked his way up from 23rd to 3rd at this point of race.
The caution on lap 106 would see Ryan Jones, Neil, Phelps, Josh Gallichan, Don Gilbert, and Tristan Koch come into the pits and grab fresh tires Gallagher would lead another big group of cars into pit road on the next caution at lap 116.
From the race restart on lap 120 we would see 3 wide racing through the field as cars with fresher tires attempted to work their way through the field of cars on older tires. Jones taking over the lead as Martin would pit on the lap 121 caution as cautions were coming quick and fast now.
On lap 141 Jones would be passed for the lead by Gallagher on fresher tires but as quoted from Jones “Im sick of finishing 2nd so its win it or bin it” he would send it a little too hard into the corner and after side-by-side contact end up spinning to the inside wall of the track
The next restart would be the last of the race and the cars that were left were able to run it home clean. Gallagher getting the win with main championship rivals Phelps in 5th and Michelmore finishing 8th.
The championship now closing to 4 points between these 3 drivers with 1 round to go.
