2022 S3 Round 11 Thunder Results
Michelmore gets the race win and Gallagher gets the championship @ Phoenix by 1 point!!
Round 11 of series 3 and the last round of the ANZCAR Thunder Series 2022 would see the series head to the Phoenix for 120 short track racing laps.
Qualifying would see Andrew Dyson take the pole position but start from the pits. Ryan Jones starting 2nd, Hamish Gallagher 3rd, Toby Stent 4th, Jason Martin 5th and Daniel Hetterscheid rounding out the front 3 rows in 6th.
A massive field of 35 cars would roll out for the starting grid on this one but that would also lead to a high number of cautions for the race with 10 in total.
Gallagher would control the lead on from the outset for the first 14 lap green flag run. Most leading drivers would stay out with Jones being the leading car to pit for tires and fuel. This would backfire somewhat as Jones would spin in turn 2 of the restart lap. Several drivers would have no where to go and collect damage from this.
Short runs would continue with Gallagher controlling the restarts with Martin and Douglas, Stent and Michelmore making up the top 5 positions. Lap 31 seeing another caution. This one seeing all the leading positions drivers coming into the pits. Gallagher picking up a penalty on this pit stop and dropping back down the field.
The Championship battle swinging to Michelmore’s way running 6th to Gallaghers 21st position after the penalty. Dyson would be the new leader running a different strategy to the bulk of the field.
Short aggressive runs would be the go as a mixture of tire life through the field. Fresh tire cars making a lot of positions up quickly on the short runs.
The Lap 79 caution would see the bulk of the leaders pit again. Ruben Phelps would take over the lead of the race at this point. Running on older tires and needing to make big moves to make up the points needed to try and win the championship coming into the race 4 points of the lead. Stent would take the lead on the lap 87 restart as Phelps would start to fall back on those older tires.
The last caution of the race coming out on lap 93 and on the restart we would see a 23-lap green flag run to the end of the race. Stent able to get a good gap early in the run but would be chased down by Michelmore with Championship rival Gallagher right behind. Phelps having pitted at the last caution for fresh tires and needing to make big moves to keep in the championship hunt would charge up through the field but stall out at the 3rd position after giving Stent the bumper to pass. Stent doing a great job holding onto the car but losing several positions in doing so.
From here Michelmore would control the race and lead home a Mitch Motorsports 1 2 3 to put the icing on the cake of a season and year where Michelmore and Gallagher have dominated the top 2 positions of all 3 championships and the year long championship.
Gallagher finishing 2nd and with a bonus point for leading a lap would be enough for him to win the season 3 championship by 1 single point to Michelmore!!!!

Seems so long ago now February when the season kicked off at Daytona. Season 1 saw Gallagher charge out of the blocks grabbing 5 wins for the 11-race season and winning the championship by 59 points to teammate Michelmore.
Season 2 saw the field start to catch up to Gallagher, but he was still able to win the season with 3 wins and 11 points back to teammate Michelmore again.
Season 3 saw the championship come down to the wire but again it would be Gallagher winning the championship with 3 wins and Michelmore again in 2nd place just 1 point behind.
For the season long championship which comprised of all 33 races with 6 drop rounds once again Gallagher was able to take it home with a 72-point margin over Michelmore.
For 2023 the reins of the series have been handed over to new ANZCAR admin member Shaun Doecke. Look for a similar season layout to this year but with some new ideas to help make it even more interesting for drivers who don’t want to run a full season.
As for me ill be taking the time freed up from running the series to try and improve the broadcasting and media side of things and running laps in the new summer series starting 23rd November with 2 X 65 laps of Nashville fairgrounds in the ARCA car.
