Dyson delivers at Dover!
The one mile paperclip at Dover is unlike any other track on the calendar. Some call it “a bigger Bristol” which is as good a description as any, however not completely accurate.
The tyre shredding concrete oval is known for its close racing and unforgiving nature.
Jason Martin would do what Jason Martin does and take pole, with man of the moment Neil Pearson lining up on his outside. The mercurial duo of Ryan Jones and Darren McKenzie would line up right behind them.
Martin would lead away early from Jones, Pearson and Stent slotting in front of new face Duane Burns. The lead trio would breakaway from the chasing pack, that would be until lap 17 when Wellman and Georgeson would make contact and bring the first caution of the race. Martin and Burns would stay out with a handful of others, while almost everyone else would pit for tyres and adjustments. A second quick caution and we were off again, Martin leading Jaie Schultz.
By lap 40 the fresh tyres were paying off, Pearson taking the lead from Martin with Stent also working his way through. Seven laps later the caution would be out again, Dautanac spinning and collecting Curtis, sending the 93 barrel rolling through the air. All would pit, and Jones would lead away from Pearson until another caution, this time Malone and Aiden Schultz making contact, the tight confines of the track making for a hadron collider-like effect on the field and destroying several cars.
Jones would lead away again from Stent on lap 59 on what would be the final restart of the race. Stent would jump quickly to the lead, with Hetterscheid, Dyson and Martin all taking advantage as the 11 lost momentum. An epic scrap for second would kick off between Hetterscheid, the 2018 champ and the 2022 champ, with Carroll-Walden, McKenzie and Douglas also keeping pace.
As things settled down, Dyson would take the lead from Stent on lap 94 and would proceed largely untroubled from there. Green flag pitstops would play out and jumble things slightly however Dyson would win comfortably from Urquijo and Neale. Martin would finish a lapped fourth, with Stent hanging on for a top five.
So with his teammate having nicked the headlines of late, there seems to be some life in the reigning champ. We're at Kansas this week, join us then.
