2023 Round 26 Cup Results
Worley Does the DPR Daytona Double.
Entering race 26 and the final race of the season to set the grid for the chase the points around the bubble were tight between Riley Curtis, Norman Clark, Koby Jordan and Christopher Tomlin.
Qualifying would see Raymond Jaeger randomly end up on pole. Shayne Bowen, Jaie Schultz, Jamie Nankervis and Daniel Hetterscheid would round out the top 5.
Early on the cars would settle into single file running keeping calm to run down the laps. A small moment would see the line break up a bit but bump drafting between teammates would see the gap close again after a handful of laps.
Attempts at forming up a 2nd line would not bare out as drivers were just looking to make it the full fuel run, and complete green flag pit stops. The first green flag pit stop cycle would start from lap 28 through to lap 32. Big movers through this cycle would be Dyson and Pearson through the use of bump drafting hard for a few laps before coming in.
It wouldn’t last long before Daniel Hetterscheid and Joshua Carroll-Walden would power past to take over the lead. On the bubble of the chase driver Curtis would be running in the top 5.
Lap 41 would see Dave Douglas and Ryan Jones power around the outside to take over the front positions on the low line. Drivers deciding now was the time to start racing with side-by-side action 9 cars deep.
With 30 laps to go Douglas, Curtis and Jones control the bottom line with 30 laps to go.
Another round of green flag pit stops would occur and its always fun to see a super speedway race go green and work through multiple green flag pit stop cycles.
The first caution of the race would come out with 10 laps to go as a mistimed bump from Douglas turns Curtis into Clark. Curtis getting substantial damage and dropping him out of the bubble battle for the chase.
Cars running at the back come into the pits to make some final adjustments.
The race would restart with 7 laps to go but another caution would happen after contact on the back straight would see a number of cars involved picking up damage.
The last race restart would occur with 2 laps to go with Phillip Worley in the lead. 3 DPR cars lined up low and 3 SRM cars lined up high. A mistimed bump between Ruben Phelps and Lachlan Urquijo would set off 2 big wrecks on the final lap making a big change on the finishing order.
Worley with the help of teammate Andrew Dyson on his back bumper would hold off a charge to the line from Phelps to grab the win by 0.055 of a second.
