2023 Round 29 Cup Results
A wedding, a milestone birthday, and a win in ANZCAR Cup. We all know which one ranks top in that list!!
Round 29 would see the series head to Bristol Motor Speedway “The Last Great Colosseum”.
Dave Douglas would start from pole for this one joined by Neil Pearson on the outside front row. Ryan Jones and Ruben Phelps starting off the 2nd row and Lachlan Urquijo with Steve Williams making up the top 6 spots.
Pearson would waste no time getting the better start off the outside line and taking over the lead of the race. A lead that he wouldn’t relinquish at all for the reminder of the race.
An early caution 10 laps in would see championship contender Andrew Dyson involved with significant damage. After lengthy repairs he would return to the track to make up some positions and gain some valuable points to keep him in the running for the chase.
On the restart Joshua Carroll-Walden in a must win position to advance in the chase would have a crack at passing Pearson but be unable to complete it. Pearson would then continue to build the leading gap. A 4 second gap built by lap 53. Dyson now back out on track would get caught up in another caution and require even more repairs. His 200th ANZCAR start clearly not going to plan.
By lap 90 the blistering pace at the front combined with the short lap time would see only 11 cars remain on the lead lap. Drivers looked to be struggling all night with the car getting loose off the corner and on the low line. Lap 95 would see the last caution of the night come out and all lead lap cars would opt to pit. A few takers for a 2-tire change here for position but in the long run that was to follow they would drop back down the order.
Pearson up the front would continue to run untroubled except for a moment of door to door banging while passing Koby Jordan to put him a lap down. The last 50 laps running to the end would see the front settled while the battles throughout the field would continue as some drivers did a better job of keeping their tires cooler than others.
Pearson would take the checkered flag untroubled to get the win by 6.5 seconds from Jones with Douglas back another 4 seconds. With these results JCW and Daniel Hetterscheid drop out of the chase running as the chase field shrinks down to 8 remaining.
Next week sees the series head to Texas for round 30 of the season and round 4 of the chase. The next block of 3 races being Texas, Talladega and the Charlotte Roval before we see 2 more drivers culled from the chase group.
