2023 Round 5 Cup Results
Hetterscheid wins at Atlanta!
After being unable to turn a racing lap in Phoenix, many of the Cup competitors could be forgiven for feeling some racing was well overdue, although opinions were certainly divided over the venue for the next race as the ANZCAR Cup Series made its bow at the new configuration.
Some love the challenge of the new “mini-Daytona” while others despise the configuration which some feel has been specially designed to create wrecks.
Darren McKenzie would line up on pole with Barry Neale to his outside. Nankervis and Hetterscheid would share the second row. At the drop of the green, Barney had to fumble for his yellow as a check up on the low line lead to O'Shea and Jordan getting together and bringing the caution out straight away.
This would send iRacing into a bit of a tizz, leading a few cars to cop penalties and give us the unusual scenario of Pearson (who was a few yards short of a lap down) leading the field away. Once the racing got back underway on lap six, Neale would lead from McKenzie, Nankervis, Hetterscheid and Kenny. The field would break into two packs and would remain so until Koch, Foster and Dautanac collected each other on lap 29, spinning and collecting Otto in the process.
A quick trip down pit road for most would see Koch and Lobb stay out and lead away, however their ageing tyres would ensure this was a brief state of affairs, McKenzie snatching the lead back soon after. Nankervis would make a run to the lead pushed by Carroll-Walden, and McKenzie would fight a largely solo battle against the low line of Nankervis and three Natari cars for several laps.
The caution would fly again on lap 57 when Kenny and Dyson got together, and a couple more cautions would come in quick succession before a long green flag run got started on lap 72.
By this stage in the race it appeared the top line was the line to be on. Nankervis lead it ahead of the Natari quartet and Turner, with McKenzie, Douglas and Dyson fighting hard on the lower line. This would continue with very little change until lap 110 when Foster would strike the outside wall and collect Carroll-Walden, Jordan also involved.
The remaining laps were punctuated by cautions and when the green fell for the final time with two to go, it would be largely the same group who had run up front all night leading again. Hetterscheid would be pushed by Stent past Nankervis, however contact between Stent, Williams and Douglas would cause a massive pile up.
Racing continued with there only being one to go, however Hetterscheid had been deprived of his pusher and SRM boys Phelps and Urquijo were coming with a huge run. Phelps would take it to the outside of Hetterscheid, the two door banging with Phelps crossing the line first, however he had tipped over the 12 allowed incident points and was penalised by iRacing leaving Hetterscheid as the victor.
McKenzie would take second with Urquijo crossing for third in the grass. Neale would be fourth and Nankervis would complete his good run with a top five.
We are off to the twists of COTA this week. Don't miss it!
