2023 Round 9 Cup Results
Pearson perfect at The Paperclip!
In keeping with the short track theme of recent weeks, the ANZCAR Cup Series descended on Martinsville for the latest instalment of what has been an enthralling season so far.
Luke Rosella would start on pole, with Dyson joining him outside row one. Row two would be Williams and Scurlock.
Rosella would lead away as Dyson would give chase. We were quickly under caution with Dautanac going around on the frontstretch. Another short burst of green followed by another caution, Pearson being the first of the frontrunners to make a stop, rejoining at the back of the field. Once the race finally got going the drivers were able to settle into a rhythm.
Rosella would lead from Dyson, Williams and Jones, with a solid battle pack of Douglas, Trahair, Foster, Stent and Malone running in behind them. The next caution on lap 44 saw the majority of the field pit, however most of the front runners would stay put, preferring to keep their track position.
A long green flag run would define the middle part of the race, with Rosella continuing to lead. Pearson, pit adjustments made, would take over second place from Dyson on lap 97 and set off after leader Rosella. Hetterscheid, Foster, Trahair and Jones would engage in classic short track combat over the entire stint, and there was plenty going on up and down the field.
A caution on lap 115 finally saw Rosella stop, handing the lead to Pearson. Trahair, Jones, Douglas and Stent would all head down for service, but many would stay out with eyes on the end.
With the checquer in sight, the intensity ramped up and a cluster of cautions left positions largely the same, save for Rosella making his way back to third place. Hetterscheid and Dyson would touch, sending the 035 spinning and setting up a green/white/checquer finish. As the field slowed for the caution, Rosella would spin and faceplant the wall right in front of a baffled Barney in the flag stand.
Off the final restart Pearson and Dyson would streak away, Rosella, clearly wounded, blocking hard to keep the Natari cars of Foster and Stent at bay. Foster would go high, too high into the marbles, losing the rear and kicking off a pile up involving several cars. The final order would be Pearson, Dyson, Rosella, Jones and Stent completing the top five.
It is one extreme to another next week, to the wide open expanses of Talladega for our traditional ANZAC race.
