2023 Series 1 Round 1 Truck Results
Truck Series Recap:
Last night the 2023 ANZCAR Season kicked off with the annual 200 mile Truck race around Daytona International Speedway. It was a quick sell out event with all 40 spots being taken up in just over 5 minutes of the race session going live. Taking top spot in Qualifying was Ruben Phelps edging out Darren McKenzie in second position.
The green flag waved and 2023 was officially underway! Phelps led the field through turns 1 and 2 as drivers settled into their positions. The highline working well out front with the front of the field side by side through the early stages of the race and the rest of the field tailing cautiously behind.
20 laps into the race and the field were all still pretty much in line together as drivers started to contemplate a set of green flag pit stops. Mitch Motorsports made the call to pit early bringing Norman Clark down pit road with them and the 4 drivers were able to line back up after pitting and get up to speed as the rest of the field trickled down the pits lap after lap. By lap 32 all the stops were done and the field tried to bunch back up together again.
The first yellow flag of the night fell on lap 47 when Lachlan Urquijo and Max Cooper went around in Turn 1 which brought the field back to pit road for a run to the finish. Danny G found himself with lead for a while notching up a race high 18 laps led but would lose the lead shortly after the races second last restart.
A huge wreck in Turn 1 took out most of leaders with 5 laps to go which left a late race shootout to take place with Norman Clark leading the charge coming to the line with one to. Contact in the short chute between Clark & Jaie Schultz triggered another wreck in turn one and in his 400th ANZCAR start, Steven Williams managed to find some space around the spinning vehicles and was all of a sudden in clean air rounding Turn 2 on the high side.
Williams was able to drive the rest of the way back to the Start/Finish line uncontested to clinch the first victory of the 2023 season ahead of runner up, Brad Fenly!
