2023 Season 1 Round 12 Thunder Results
Mckenzie takes the Series 1 finale at Mid Ohio – extends lead in Road Course Title
Wednesday night saw the Thunder Series head to the challenging layout at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course. Mckenzie claimed pole position ahead of Tunrer, Douglas, Aiden Schultz and Jaie Schultz rounding out the top 5.
The early laps saw Mckenzie and Turner pull away from the field whilst the likes of Dyson and Jones started to move their way forward from starting towards the rear of the field.
10 laps into the race and Mckenzie had built a 3.5 second lead over Turner, with Jaie Schultz another 7 seconds back. Drivers throughout the field were starting to struggle with a lack of rear grip as the continuous turning nature of the track left little time to cool them down, with some drivers electing to head to pit lane for some fresh rubber early.
Lap 18, and Turner and Jaie Schultz headed to the lane from 2nd and 3rd for fresh tyres and a splash of fuel and 2 laps later saw the leader Mckenzie head to the lane. Tuner managed a good couple of laps, undercutting Mckenzie for 2nd position whilst Dyson inherited the lead by staying out.
16 laps to go, and after sustaining plenty of pressure from Turner, Dyson pits from the lead for tyres and fuel, returning to the track in P8. This leaves the top 5 as Turner, Mckenzie, Jaie Schultz, Aiden Schultz and Jones.
With 10 laps to go, Dyson had sliced his way through the field on fresher tyres and up into 3rd but 20 seconds off the battle for the lead. Turner and Mckenzie were racing each other hard, sliding their cars around until Turner looped it with overheated rear tyres, with Mckenzie taking over the lead once again.
Mckenzie kept his cool and his head down over the closing laps, maintaining a smooth line and taking the victory by 7 seconds. Turner managed to hang on to his marsh mellowed rear tyres, claiming 2nd ahead of the fast finishing Dyson with Jones and Jaie Schultz rounding out the top 5.
