2023 Season 2 Round 12 Thunder Results
Thunder Series Review
The end of Series 2 for the Thunder Series culminated on Wednesday night at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with 20 drivers keen to end the series on a high. Josh Michelmore started the night well, claiming pole position, with title leader Andrew Dyson starting on his outside; row 2 would see Jason Martin line up alongside Ryan Jones.
Michelmore started well, whilst Dyson was down to 7th within a couple of laps, elevating Martin into second, followed by Jones, Barry Neale, and Aiden Schultz.
Martin would take over the lead just a few laps later, as Michelmore also allowed himself to drift back into the field. Drivers soon would work out that to turn this race into a 1 stop strategy, they would need to fuel save to stretch their mileage, should it stay green for the duration. Those that weren’t trying the 1 stop strategy started to head to pit lane from around lap 25.
This proved a challenge for the leaders who had stayed out, dealing with lapped cars on fresh tyres trying to make their way past and regain their lost lap.
End of lap 33, and all the front runners except for Michelmore pitted for their first and hopefully only stop of the night, with Dyson winning the race off of pit lane ahead of Martin, Jones, Aiden Schultz and Neale. Michelmore would come in the following lap and emerge next to Aiden Schultz and Neale; contact between the later two drivers would see Neale have a big moment exiting turn 2 but keep it pointed forward and the track staying green.
From there on, Dyson controlled the race easily from the front and take a comfortable win, but the battle for the remaining podium spots was on. Martin, Jones and Michelmore spent several laps trading positions before Michelmore would make a move into second position, holding onto this to the end, whilst Jones started to fade, allowing Martin to round out the podium.
