2023 Season 2 Round 9 Thunder Results
Thunder Series Review
Round 9 of Series 2 saw drivers head to Road America, which doubled as Round 4 of the Road Course Title, with 20 drivers would suit up to take on the 4 mile circuit. Wade Sheedy and Andrew Dyson would set identical times in qualifying, with Sheedy starting from pole; row 2 would feature Kai Ardley and Ryan Jones.
The field got away cleanly through the opening sequence of corners, with Sheedy controlling the lead whilst Dyson slotted into second. Over the first couple of laps, Sheedy was able to pull a lead of almost 2 seconds, whilst the top 5 were pretty evenly spaced out, with some decent battles towards the bottom of the top 10.
Dyson would slowly bring the margin down, and would pass Sheedy for the lead on lap 7. At this point in the race, many drivers were already struggling with tyre condition, let alone some pretty average looking cars, after off track moments or contact with other competitors.
As the race neared the mid race distance, drivers started to come into the pits and get some much needed fresh rubber whilst the leading 3 of Dyson, Sheedy and Ardley along with Jones continued on, with Jones the last to stop at the end of lap 16.
10 laps to go and Dyson held a 6 second lead over Sheedy, who had Ardley just a second behind, whilst Jaie Schultz and Matthew Raymond rounded out the top 5.
Fenly, Phelps and Williams would have great battle for P11, whilst most other drivers were reasonably comfortable in their positions. In the closing laps, Michelmore, Martin and Phelps all had off tracks moments which allowed positions to change and new battles to play out.
But out front, no one was catching Dyson who would take the win by 14 seconds over Sheedy, with Ardley a further 4 seconds back, with 16 of the 20 starters making it to the finish.
