Dyson strikes back in Texas shootout!
Texas Motor Speedway would play host to the fourth round of The Chase last Thursday night. While much of the interest going into the race centred on the fortunes of the contenders, once practice began focus would shift to the cars themselves as they were struggling for rear end grip especially out of the notorious second turn.
Neil Pearson would take what is becoming almost a traditional pole position with Josh Michelmore lining up alongside. Scurlock and Martin would line up on the second row.
At the drop of the green Pearson would get away cleanly with Scurlock close behind. Dyson would jump from the third row to third place almost immediately, with Jaiden Russell also picking up places. Scurlock would move to the lead on the fourth lap and begin to build a solid lead.
Lap fourteen would see the race's first casualty, with Noddy Tompkins banging the 80 Camaro into the outside wall and coming to the pits with suspension damage. Three laps later Scurlock paid the price for his early pace, ceding the lead back to Pearson and dropping quickly down the order. His lead would last nearly thirty laps, with Russell taking the lead on lap forty-seven with Dyson taking over two laps later.
Approaching lap sixty the green flag pitstops began, and as so often is the case a spanner was thrown well and truly in the works when Pritchard spun while trying to get on pit road, bringing out the caution. When all was said and done Dyson lead from Hetterscheid, with Foster, Raymond and Williams lining up behind. At the restart the joint points leaders sprinted away, Dyson and Foster engaging in their own battle. Foster would lead briefly before being caught between Dyson and Neale in a three wide, as the Kansas winner began to make his presence felt. Neale would harass Dyson for a while, but would ultimately fall back.
Dyson, Foster and Russell would run in that order until the final round of stops, where Russell would take the undercut and drop in on lap 114. Foster would follow on lap 119 with Dyson pitting a lap later, emerging from the pits side by side with the 53 before slotting in front. Both would need to overhaul the leading duo of Russell and Neale to have any chance of victory.
Dyson would pass Neale with a little tap on lap 133, and take the lead from Russell five laps later. Foster would move up to third but would not be able to clear the 28, despite some door banging action between the two in the closing laps.
In the end Dyson would win from Russell, Foster and Neale. Pearson would outrun his recent luck to take fifth, with Michelmore, Hetterscheid, Scurlock, Raymond and Clark completing the top ten.
The series now moves to Talladega where big wrecks and big points swings are more than possible, and the bulk of The Chase field need a result to stop the top two from clearing out.
