2022 Round 31 Cup Results
Dyson pulls one back at the Roval!
As the 2022 ANZCAR Cup Series moves into its twilight stages, it appears less and less willing to die. The race for the title is the closest in the history of the championship, with double and reigning champion Edward Foster going head to head with the form man of the year, Andrew Dyson. All eyes indeed would be firmly on the 41 as the series stopped at the Charlotte Roval, such has been his dominance of the road courses so far.
It was something of a surprise to see Dyson beaten to the pole position by returning teammate Phillip Worley, who would lead the all DPR front row. Daniel Hettersheid and Neil Pearson would fill row two as the field ran to the green. As they thundered through turn one Worley nearly undid all his good qualifying work with a huge slide, coming so close to scraping the purple Camaro along the wall but managing to save it and retain his first place.
Pearson meanwhile had his nose down the inside of Hetterscheid going into turn three when he clipped the inside kerb and bounced into the 035, sending him across the inside painted area of turn four and down several places. Dyson would slip past Worley for the lead once they hit the oval section, their mind clearly on the bigger picture as the season reaches a crucial stage.
Further down the order Josh Carroll-Walden would battle with Barry Neale, Josh Michelmore and the recovering Hetterscheid over fifth place, with Darryn Lobb set on steaming through from his lowly grid position of fourteenth. Pearson would make a small error with big consequences at the back stretch chicane, collecting the outside wall and needing to pit for repairs.
As the field settled most attention would focus on Hetterscheid and Lobb cutting through the field. Hetterscheid would take Martin for fourth place on the third lap, while Lobb would take the place for himself on lap sixteen after an entertaining battle before setting about catching Foster for third.
The pitstops would see no major surprises as the majority of drivers kept their original tyres for the duration of the race. Lobb would do his pursuit of the podium no favours with a brief off-track excursion while Clark and Urquijo would both hit the wall re-entering the oval with eleven laps to go and retire from the race.
None of this would trouble Dyson as he led Worley home, Foster taking third ahead of Lobb and Hetterscheid. Carroll-Walden would be sixth, with Michelmore, Martin, Neale and Pearson completing the top ten.
We now look to a week off to recharge before the final four races to end the season. With all the attention on Foster and Dyson, can a dark horse throw their hat in the ring and rewrite the script? You will only find out on Performance e-Streaming.
