2022 Series 3 Round 12 Trucks Results
Truck Series Recap:
On Monday night the Affinity Constructions Truck series would host the final race of the ANZCAR season @ Phoenix Raceway where two championships were being decided.
In the Season 3, 2022 Championship, Josh Michelmore would lead Danny G by a single point heading into the race and in the Full Season Championship, Edward Foster went into the race ahead of Jaiden Russell by 17 points with a drop round still to play a factor at the end of the race. Andrew Dyson put his truck on Pole ahead of Danny G and the 20 truck field sped away at the drop of the green flag. It didn’t take long for Hamish Gallagher to find his way into the lead with Danny G following as Dyson fell back through the top half of the field early. The field had spread out with Michelmore, Jason Martin and Jaiden Russell hustling hard against one another which brought Ruben Phelps into the mix and the nights first caution waved at about lap 60.
This threw a few drivers off guard who had just finished green flag pit stops, but the rest of the leaders had stayed out and took the caution as an opportunity to stock up on fresh rubber.
The green waved again and Gallagher continued to pace the field in front, after another yellow flag waved Gallagher, Martin and Phelps stayed on while the field pitted, some stopping for 2 tires, others for 4, splitting up the running order. As the green waved Gallagher was able to pull away again as Danny G drove up from 7th to 3rd behind Phelps before the next caution flew and sent all the leaders back to pit lane for new rubber.
This set up the second last restart of the night and again Gallagher leapt away as Phelps and Danny G battled for 2nd place. Coming off turn 2 though Phelps made a mistake which triggered a huge multi vehicle crash on the backstretch taking out 2 title contenders, Michelmore and Edward Foster.
Green flag, and Gallagher continued out front for the final 25 laps, Russell made a clutch move to get around Danny G for 2nd as Danny G fell back to 3rd and rode the final 20 laps out to seal his Season 3 championship. Gallagher took the win over Russell, Danny G, Nigel Paton and Brenton Henderson.
As it would turn out, the pass Russell made on Danny G late would seal his Full Season Championship and as the final race was loaded into the points calculator, Russell and Foster were tied for first place with Russell clinching the Championship with a tie breaker of 6 wins to 2. Danny G would finish the full season in 3rd place, only 7 points away from the lead.
