2023 Round 3 Cup Results
Dyson leads DPR lockout at Las Vegas! (We avoided any gambling reference, how about that?)
The third round of the 2023 ANZCAR Cup Series was hosted at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Not too far outside the famous tourist trap of Las Vegas itself, which draws millions of people who would never otherwise visit the Nevada desert to within spitting distance of a top secret military base.
To the racing then, and Matthew Raymond would surprise no-one more than himself by putting his SRM Camaro on pole, with Daniel Hetterscheid joining him on the front row. Neil Pearson would experience starting a race behind someone else for the first time in 2023 by starting inside the second row, Foster joining him.
Hetterscheid would take the lead around the outside of turn one as Raymond began to move backwards. Pearson, Foster and Stent would give chase. By lap twelve Pearson was looking to relieve Hetterscheid of his lead when the caution flew for the first time, Turner and Bowen coming together out of turn four.
The resulting caution would send most down pit road for fresh rubber and adjustments, with Jaie Schultz, Jackson, Aiden Schultz and Shayne Bowen playing a bit of strategy to move themselves to the lead of the pack. One notable absence was Foster, who had pit road issues and had to come down for a second time, leaving him at the back of the field.
The restart would see the fresh tyres pay off as those who pitted moved back to the front, Hetterscheid leading from Stent, Pearson and Worley. The race moved into a long green flag run where something of the form would become clear, Natari had the short run pace while DPR were kings of the long run. Pearson would take the lead on lap thirty-one, with Worley, Lobb and O'Shea also showing strong long run pace.
Green flag pit stops would occur around lap sixty with every car needing to come for service. As the laps wore on, Pearson would clear out from Hetterscheid, with Lobb, Stent, O'Shea and Foster all squabbling over the back end of the top five. Sadly this group would not continue together as Lobb came together with Phil Otto with Stent also getting involved. Lobb would carry on with damage, while the other two would lose multiple laps in the pits.
Pearson would lead Hetterscheid off the restart with O'Shea also disputing second. Foster followed ahead of Bratka and Dyson who had both left it late to make their first impressions on the race. Hetterscheid would battle Pearson for the lead while Dyson and Foster would argue over third place, with a melee behind for almost every position.
This would last until lap 104 when Aiden Schultz and Brenton Henderson would find each other, the resulting contact bringing out the race's third caution.
This would send multiple cars to the lane for their final set of tyres. Pearson, Dyson and Williams among the prominent takers. Hetterscheid, Foster, Bratka, Carroll-Walden and O'Shea would stay out and save a set of tyres for the end, just in case.
Hetterscheid would lead away from Foster, the two disputing the lead with Bratka hovering behind. The fresh tyred cars were making great headway, and would clearly soon be at the front. Pearson would duly retake the lead with ten to go, Dyson and Williams following him through shortly after. Dyson would move to the lead four laps later, and that is how they would run to the flag. Dyson would win from Pearson, Williams third, O'Shea would best Foster in a titanic final laps scrap to make it 1-2-3-4 for DPR.
We head to Phoenix next week for what is sure to be a firey encounter. See you all there.
