2023 Season 1 Round 10 Thunder Results
Martin holds off Jones to claim the win at Dover
Wednesday night saw the Thunder Series head the challenging concrete surface of the Monster Mile. Michelmore claimed his first pole position of the series, narrowly beating out Jones with Martin and Malone rounding out the 2nd row in the 30 car field.
Michelmore got a good start and lead early from Jones and Martin. Due to almost half of the field not setting a time in qualifying, there was plenty of action was occurring in the mid pack as the faster drivers tried to move forward.
Lap 8, and Jones makes a move on Michelmore into turn 3 to claim the lead, with the top 3 starting to pull away from the field, soon growing to over 2 seconds.
Despite plenty of action throughout the field, most drivers had settled into a rhythm with a view to not overheating the tyres as the race developed into a long green flag run.
By lap 30, Michelmore had dropped down to third position and getting plenty of pressure from Carroll-Walden whilst the top 2 of Jones and Martin had pulled away by 1.5 seconds despite working their way through the lapped traffic. Just 8 laps later and Martin was able to inherit the lead from Jones with a good pass entering turn 3.
Jones was able to make use of the lapped traffic on lap 61, getting by Martin who briefly got impeded by lapped traffic. Those 2 were still comfortable out front, with a 2 second gap over Carroll-Walden, with Neale and Urquijo rounding out the top 5. Some of the drivers further down the order had started to make green flag stops, which added another complexity to the race as with the better grip started to make their way past the front runners.
Approaching the mid way point of the race and still caution free. The majority of the field had started to make their way through pit lane for fuel and tyres. Pitting from the lead, Jones had been able to push hard over the couple of laps leading up to his stop and managed to build a lead of nearly 2 seconds over Martin. Carroll-Walden had a big moment coming into the lane, locking the rears and having a half spin at the entry cone narrowly missed by Martin who had followed him in.
By lap 85, all drivers had received service on pit road with Jones leading by 8 seconds over Martin ahead of Carroll-Walden a further 4 seconds back, Urquijo and Michelmore in close combat rounding out the top 5 with Bissett in 6th the last car on the lead lap. The caution flag came out on lap 103 with several cars coming together when Jordan and Williams had a moment in turn 4. The majority of the field returned to pit lane to get fresh tyres for the sprint to the finish.
Jones timed the restart well and got a small gap over Martin, ahead of Urquijo, Carroll-Walden and Michelmore and a few laps later Urquijo moved up to P2 with a good move on Martin into turn 3.
Urquijo moved into the lead after Jones gives the front straight wall a rub, bunching the top 4 up with 32 laps to go, with Jones dropping to third when Martin was able to get by.
It seemed that Urquijo had overheated up his tyres, as Martin and Jones were able to move back in front and then having to withstand pressure from Carroll-Walden for third.
Whilst Jones was always within striking distance, Martin always had enough maintain the lead and go on and claim his second win of the series. Despite having a race high 76 laps led, it would be the runner up spot for Jones whilst Carroll-Walden rounded out the podium.
