2023 Season 3 Round 3 Thunder Results
Thunder Series Review
20 drivers headed to Wisconsin on Wednesday night to take on the challenging flat track that is the Milwaukee Mile. Ryan Jones would take pole position ahead of Jason Martin, Duane Burns and Ruben Phelps
Drivers battled hard for positions early, knowing that the low line was the place to be and passing would be challenging.
Jones would lead from the start, and after the first 20 laps a group of 6 cars had managed to get a small gap over the rest of the field.
As the long green flag run continued to play out, bigger gaps began to emerge throughout the field as drivers started to struggle to look after their RF tyres.
By lap 40, Jones had a half second lead over Martin and Burns, whilst Phelps in fourth was 2 seconds behind. Gaps would start to fluctuate as the leaders started to make their way through lapped traffic as well as some drivers heading to pit lane for fresh tyres and looking at a potential 2 stop strategy.
Barry Neale would be the first of the front runners to stop for tyres and fuel on lap 66, whilst the rest of the pitstops would be completed by lap 77, with Josh Michelmore the last driver to pit.
This would leave Neale at the front of the field, 5 seconds ahead of Jones, followed by Phelps, Burns and Martin.
On tyres that were 10 laps fresher, Jones would slowly bring down the gap to Neale and by lap 92 had made the catch, assisted slightly by lapped traffic. It would only be a few more laps before Jones would retake the lead with a pass heading into turn 3.
Jones would go on to take the win by almost 4 seconds, and is the third different winner in first 3 races of the Series, with Barry Neale home second and Duane Burns third in his first Thunder Series event.
Well done to all drivers for getting through the 125 laps caution free.
Next week sees the Thunder Series head to Kansas Speedway for 100 laps.
