2023 Round 30 Cup Results
The reigning champ awakes from a slumber to dominate (if you can call 4 races a slumber)!
Texas Motor Speedway would host race 30 of the ANZCAR cup and the start of the round of 8.
The favourite for this race would be possibly one of the many few drivers that is a fan of the current track layout Andrew Dyson, and he would waste no time confirming that taking the pole position from teammate Phillip Worley. The 2nd row made up by Ruben Phelps and Ryan Jones. Brenton Henderson putting a solid qualifying effort to start 5th with Teammate Matthew Raymond on his outside. The lowest stating position for a round of 8 drivers being Jaie Schultz in 14th.
The early running would see Dyson clear out in front and Schultz making moves through the field up to 9th by lap 10. Phelps would start putting pressure on Dyson’s bumper as the run settled in, but the DPR team would be showing their impressive speed early with cars running 1/3/4/5.
The races only caution would come out on lap 26 after contact between Lachlan Urquijo and Luke Crum. Expectantly all cars would take the chance to pit, making changes to their set ups, getting fresh tires, and topping up fuel.
From the restart Douglas would make use of a great start and move into 2nd Jones would run 3rd and make the pass a few laps later with Phelps running 4th. A fierce side by battle would be going on for several laps for positions 12th to 17th. This run would see Urquijo start making moved through the field after restarting near the back of the pack.
By lap 70 the race would start seeing a few cars retire after heavy contact with the wall usually on the exit of turn 4. Drivers getting caught out by this would be Christopher Tomlin, Christopher Ireland and Worley.
The green flag pitstop cycle would kick off from lap 78 onwards and after the cycle completed the top 3 running order would be Dyson, Jones, and Seven Williams. One of the championship favourites Neil Pearson would be having a struggle with this race having run outside the top 10 for most of the race but working his way up to 7th.
The next round of green flag pit stops would start with Williams on lap 116 with Schultz following suit. Jones and Douglas pitting on lap 121, Dyson lap 124 and the SRM team completing the cycle pitting on lap 126. Pearson and Urquijo would battle hard through out the last few laps for 6th with Pearson holding the position at the end of the race.
At the finish line Dyson would cap off a dominant run for the win with Jones finishing 2nd and Phelps home in 3rd. Raymond would finish 4th and Douglas 5th. Other notable good finishes would see Norman Clark home in 8th, Brenton Henderson 9th and Shayne Bowen rounding out the top 10.
Next week is where this knock out format gets really interesting as the series head to Talladega and as we know anything can happen with super speedway racing. Only Andrew Dyson is locked into the round of 6 so all the remaining round of 8 drivers will be desperate to get the race win to advance while also wanting to stay out of trouble.
