2024 ANZCAR Lightning Series Legends Race 3 Talladega
Legends Series Recap:
On Monday night the ANZCAR Lightning Rounds hit Talladega SuperSpeedway in the Legend cars. A shorter field of 15 entries lined the grid led by Shayne Bowen
The race turned out to be quite an interesting one as the short field made for a lot of green flag racing over the 80 laps with only one caution that ended the race with 2 laps to go. Akin to this years Daytona 500 in the real world, drivers had to save enough fuel to make a one stop strategy work. While most of the field was able to push the fuel to the halfway mark, coming out of the pits for the second run was a little harder as cars had to race a little faster to catch back up to the lead pack. This caused the field to have to slow up completely to save enough fuel for the end of the race and at times run 25mph slower than average.
The leaders all played the waiting game in the final ten laps wondering who was going to jump out and make the first move and see if they’d saved enough laps of fuel. Points leader Edward Foster had to come down for a green flag pitstop to take on fuel while the lead pack crept around. Danny G was the first to put the loud pedal down and go for it with 3 laps to go, taking the lead heading to the white flag a lap later, Brad Fenly had a huge run down the front stretch and looked on for a slingshot for the lead himself, but a caution coming to the last lap paused the field and declared Danny G the winner!
