2022 Round 15 Cup Results
Dyson takes victory as Gateway makes Cup Series bow!
For the first time ever the 247 Sim Services ANZCAR Cup Series visited the IndyCar stronghold of Gateway, or World Wide Technology Raceway to give it the name absolutely no one uses, for the latest chapter of the 2022 season story.
Michael Scurlock would be the form man throughout practice and it was to the surprise of nobody when he put his mustachioed Camry on pole, bring joined by Jason Martin on the front row.
The race would commence with a long green flag run, sixty-six green flag laps to be exact, within which Dyson had made his way to the lead after a quiet start and was leading Martin and Josh Michelmore when the caution flew for a single car incident involving Nathan Button.
The caution had come at a somewhat awkward time, with some of the lead runners, notably Scurlock, Hobson and Douglas, having already pitted under green and being trapped a lap down.
Most got their lap back when the leaders pitted, allowing them to rejoin the rear of the field.
Dyson took off again on the restart, while Darryn Lobb peeled to the pitlane. He was the first to be caught out by the odd pitlane configuration at Gateway, black flagged for passing under yellow.
The race ran green again for another thirty laps. Dyson continued to lead from Martin, Hetterscheid and Michelmore traded for third, and Jaiden Russell made his way into the top five.
A single car spin from Ryan Jones would bring the pace car out for a second time, with the field all electing to come down pit road. While the leaders found the second round of pit stops to be routine, Scurlock, Foster and Trahair would be caught out by the pit road this time, all getting black flags for their troubles.
Thus began an increase in intensity as the race began to wind down. Short green flag runs punctuated by caution periods would cover the last thirty laps. Dyson led serenely as the rest of the field bumped panels and took every run in an attempt to solidify their final positions. The final caution would fly on lap 122, when Douglas spun in turn four causing Russell to lose control and collect Paul Jackson.
The final four lap run to the chequer was led all the way by Dyson, with Michelmore second, a disbelieving Foster in third, Hobson recovering to fourth and Garry Wellman in fifth after fighting back onto the lead lap not once, but twice.
Join us again when the Cup heads to some right turns at Sonoma!

A note on redressing position. While it is not a rule in ANZCAR to redress a position gained via an accidental bump, we understand that sometimes drivers wish to do this in a display of sportsmanship. While good sportsmanship is always encouraged, we request that drivers also consider the affect that suddenly slowing may have on cars immediately behind, and if they still wish to redress do so safely.
