2022 Round Cup Results
“Softly softy” pays off for Hobson as he saves his way to a win at Indy!
The ANZCAR Cup Series rolled into Indianapolis to be greeted by a new-look IMS. In existence for several years now in the real world, NASCAR's continued presence at the road course was enough to jolt iRacing's scanners into action and presto, we have a rescan.
As per real life racing ANZCAR drivers can also be divided into two classes whenever the road turns right, genuinely good road course drivers (think Marcos Ambrose or Boris Said) and good ol' oval boys who make do the best they can (think Earnhardt, Jarrett or Kurt Busch). To call these front runners “road course ringers” would be unfair, as many of these drivers have proven adept on ovals also, especially in the era of the Next Gen Cup car.
It was Phillip Worley taking pole positions ahead of Brenton Hobson, Neil Pearson and Andrew Dyson. With Jake Moloney also joining the field from fifth place, it seemed anyone unfamiliar with a V8 Supercar would be fighting for scraps, and so it proved. Worley would lead away strongly from Hobson, with Dyson being pursued by Moloney, while Pearson would slide backwards toward Michael Scurlock in the early running. Moloney was wasting no time, firing past his rivals to lead by the sixth lap.
The lead quartet would run in order throughout the opening part of the race. There were some spins and incidents further down the field with Hetterscheid going around on lap one, Neale spinning on lap two with Wellman and Douglas being involved in separate incidents on lap three.
The main talking point of the race would revolve around pit strategy, with some electing to save their fuel and do the race non-stop, with others electing to take a splash of fuel. Maloney would pit from the lead on lap twenty and take tyres, a move definitely not in vogue so far this season. Worley would come to the lane ten laps later and take fuel only. This left the race in the familiar hands of Hobson and Dyson, who would both save enough to run non-stop, with Hobson's engine gasping its last only metres after the finish line on the final lap, the Synergy man having done enough to take victory.
Worley would run third with Moloney consigned to fourth. Darryn Lobb would non-stop his way to fifth ahead of Pearson, with Foster, Scurlock, Hetterscheid and Martin completing the top ten.
Next week the circus moves to the much loved Richmond. Will it be another DPR benefit? Will Hobson find his oval mojo, or will one of the improving Mitch cars make their mark again?
