ANZCAR Cup 2022 Round 4 Recap

247

Hetterscheid rises in Phoenix!

Clear skies greeted the teams as they rolled out for round four of the 247 ANZCAR Cup in the Arizona desert. Hobson made it two consecutive pole positions for the Synergy squad, with Michael Scurlock joining him on the front row.

Hobson duly lead away as the field fanned out across the dogleg on lap one. The furious pace would only last until the second lap when Ryan Jones drilled Dylan O'Shea into the third turn. This would set the tone for the early part of the race as the running was punctuated by caution periods, with Hobson and Andrew Dyson out front.

The lap 40 restart was the start of a long green flag run that saw Hobson continue to lead Dyson in a breakaway while Daniel Hetterscheid disputed third place with Neil Pearson and Scurlock. The remainder of the field separated itself into several small packs as most positions remained under constant dispute.

Jones became the first to dive for the pits on lap 75, kicking off the green flag pitstops. Each driver chose their moment to take service over the next 25 laps, with Hobson the final driver to come to pit road on lap 100.

On lap 102 came the defining moment of the race. Hobson, freshly out of the pits on new rubber, dove across the dogleg with Jason Martin to retake a lead lap position from new leader Hetterscheid, who himself was lapping the damaged car of Greg Spencer. As Hobson rejoined the banking Hetterscheid made contact with the 88, turning it into the outside wall.

The resulting caution was awkward for many drivers who found themselves needing to take the wave around to rejoin the lead lap. The restart would see Hetterscheid lead away from Michelmore, Jones, Foster and Jaeger. The running order quickly settled as Hetterscheid, Jones, Foster and Dyson, and they would run like this until lap 116, when Jones made contact with the lapped car of Gary Wellman. Jones would fight to save the car but Foster would nip past, the resulting check up allowing Dyson to thread past them both into second place.

This was how they would finish, with Hetterscheid taking the win from Dyson, Foster, Jaeger and Raymond.
