2022 Round Cup Results
Pearson bounces back in Atlanta!
Partially overcast conditions greeted the teams as they unpacked for the fifth round of the 247 ANZCAR Cup, held for the last time on the Atlanta configuration used since 1997. Qualifying would be the Neil and Neale show, with Pearson sharing the front row with Barry.
Pearson would jump out to an early lead before being overhauled by Scurlock, who led the field in a large train through much of the early running. With the race being 160 laps and tyre management being the order of the day, many drivers were unwilling to lay too much on the line too early, with those who did attempt a move down the inside often losing out and being shuffled back. Barry Neale would take his Toyota to the point on lap 22, but by and large the top half of the field ran in an unchanged order, save for Pearson regaining the lead on lap 31.
The relative tranquillity would be broken on lap 43, when O'Shea and Nankervis fell victim to netcode contact while disputing 20th place. This would see the entire field make use of the break in play to fuel up and get a fresh set of tyres.
The green would last only a handful of laps when Josh Michelmore spun exiting turn two, collecting Martin and Neale. Pearson would lead the restart from Dyson and Hobson, with Worley, Russell, Foster, Grzeszkiewicz and Trahair disputing positions behind them.
On lap 87 Jaiden Russell would make a move up the inside of Phillip Worley but was unable to complete the move, running the DPR man into the wall on the exit of turn two. Both drivers would initially recover however Russell then swerved his car into the side of Worley, who in turn collected Foster with Scurlock, Hetterscheid, Carroll-Walden, Jackson and Williams all being caught in the wreck.
This again sent the entire field down pit road for tyres, fuel and more than a little panel beating. Dyson would lead Pearson, Hobson and Trahair away. Two more cautions would punctuate the running with some drivers electing to stay out, and others taking service. A lead group of nine cars would form as the cars streaked toward the chequered flag. Pearson, Hobson and Dyson would all take turns in the lead as the laps clicked off.
Eventually the lead trio would drop Foster and Scurlock (who was in trouble with fuel) to decide the race amongst themselves. Pearson would prevail from Dyson who nicked second place from Hobson on the final lap.
Raymond Jaeger was the winner of the Lucky 31 race and will lock himself into the field for the next round.
See you all at COTA as the drivers duel under the big Texas sky.
