2022 Round 19 Cup Results
Dyson makes amends with a dominant run at New Hampshire!
The latest edition of the 247 ANZCAR Cup took place at yet another traditional venue in the mid-season swing, New Hampshire Motor Speedway is named after the state rather than its hometown of Loudon these days, and is somewhat unusual in that it began life as a road course named Bryar Motorsports Park in 1964, before having an oval sort of plonked on top of it in 1990.
Now over half way into the season, a strong form guide seems to have emerged, and gone for now seem to be the days of last season that boasted fourteen different winners. This season only seven drivers have visited victory lane, with only three attending more than once.
The race began with Andrew Dyson on pole with points leader Brenton Hobson lining up alongside him. When the green flag flew Dyson would lead away, with Foster starting inside row two taking second from Hobson into the first turn.
The track seemed to favour a single groove early on, with Douglas, Hetterscheid and Neale slotting in behind the front three and running in that order for the opening stanza.
The race would run under green for eighteen laps, when Aiden Schultz would spin under brakes trying to dive under Norman Clark. The leaders would all elect to stay out and on the restart Hobson would return the turn one favour to Foster, nipping down to take second place. Hetterscheid and Neale would briefly dispute fifth before slotting back in line.
This would lead to a long green flag run where the gaps between the cars would change more than many of the positions. Dave Douglas began to fall back while Pearson began to move forward. Russell and Trahair would continue to run strongly with Martin, while a decidedly unwell Scurlock did his best to hang on.
On lap forty-eight we would see the caution again, a harmless self spin from Williams slowing the field once more. All would pit with the exception of Garry Wellman. The 45 has been having as extremely strong season so far, sitting on the brink of a Chase position. He would help his cause with a point for leading a lap, he would lead three in total.
The restart would see the field squeeze past Wellman on his well used tyres, Dyson leading once more from Hobson and the two Natari cars of Hetterscheid and Foster disputing third. Neale would chase them with Trahair up from thirteenth to the brink of the top five.
As the laps wore on, Dyson was showing a clean pair of Goodyears to Hobson, who had an impatient train of cars behind him. This would continue until lap eighty-five when Hetterscheid, after multiple attempts to clear the 88 car, saw his opportunity as Hobson ran right out to the wall in turn four. Unfortunately he collected the rear corner of Hobson before bouncing across the track and collecting Foster, changing the complexion of the top five in a moment.
With Hobson out of the race and Foster facing lengthy repairs, the field would filter down pit road once more. When all was said and done, Neale would inherit second behind Dyson, with Trahair, Russell, Martin and Michelmore behind them. Trahair would take second place after the restart and Pearson, who had been quiet until now, was suddenly up to fourth. As the laps ticked by, Brad Allison also suddenly appeared, looking for all the world like he was wanting to relieve Michelmore of sixth place.
A second self spin from Williams would bring the field under caution again, quickly to be followed by another when Lobb would collect Clark, kicking off an accident which also affected Allison, Malone, Williams and Wellman.
That would prove to be the final caution of the race as Dyson led Russell home over the final ten laps. Pearson would run third, Neale finally delivered on recent promise with fourth, with Trahair, Michelmore, a recovering Hetterscheid, a sickly Scurlock, Phelps and Martin completing the top ten.
