2022 S3 Round 2 Thunder Results
A brutal night out with the lady in black!!
Round 2 of the ANZCAR Thunder Series 3 2022 would see 19 cars line up for 110 laps @ Darlington.
Hamish Gallagher would set the tone for the night qualifying on pole with Lachlan Urquijo joining him on the front row. Jaiden Russell, Josh Michelmore and Tom Neil would round out the top 5 starting spots.
On the form up lap Urquijo would have a real-life car crash into a power pole occur on his street and lose power to his house and disappearing from the session.
This would make for a plenty of room on the race start for Gallagher with the top lane clear.
Early on Russell would challenge Gallagher for the lead but as the green flag run went on Russell would start dropping back off the pace in 2nd with Michelmore running behind in 3rd.
Heavy contact with the wall would start ending races from lap 10 onwards as the Darlington track would live up to its tough reputation. Not helped by a set up that was reported to become extremely tight as the track moved into night-time conditions.
The attrition rate was high with 7 cars retiring due to crashes or session dropouts and another car having lengthy pit stop to fix big damage. The full race would run green with no cautions coming out. Green flag pit stops for the leading drivers would begin around the 55-lap mark cutting the race distance in half.
Russell would take over the race lead when Gallagher pitted on lap 56. He would pit from the lead on lap 61 picking up some right-side damage just before coming in to pit lane and leading to retiring from the race.
Rueben Phelps would stay out till lap 66 pitting from the lead. This would help Rueben bring the car home strong and clean ending up in 2nd position after starting 13th.
Gallagher would be too strong and bring home another dominant win.
1st: Hamish Gallagher
2nd: Ruben Phelps
3rd: Josh Michelmore
4th: Steven Williams
5th: Matthew Raymond
