2022 Series 3 Round 3 Thunder Results
Foster rises above the noise and confusion to get the win @ Kansas!!
Round 3 of the ANZCAR Thunder Series 3 2022 would see a good field line up for 100 laps @ Kansas Speedway.
Qualifying would see Hamish Gallagher taking the pole position followed by teammate Josh Michelmore. Steven Williams, Edward Foster, Ryan Jones, and Nigel Paton would make up the first 3 rows. The top 18 cars separated by half a second in qualifying.
Gallagher would control the lead for the first green flag run with Foster working his way through the field to 2nd and starting to mount a challenge for the lead when the races first caution of the night would come out.
Pit lane would see all the cars come in to get fuel and mix of drivers taking 2 tires or 4. Nigel Paton going with a fuel only pit stop and winning the race off pit road.
Paton would get a good restart on the race resumption on lap 20 but it would be a short lived as Gallagher and Foster would use their fresh tires to go 3 wide and make the pass. Tight racing with a bit of contact would see Foster take over the lead from Gallagher. Williams and Jones would battle it out for the 3rd position running bumper to bumper for several laps.
Jones would fall back into the clutches of Michelmore who would make the pass to take over 4th position on lap 33. A number of back-and-forth battles would be going on throughout the field. The outside wall also proving tricky for drivers to keep the right side of their cars off.
From around lap 50 onwards we would start to see cars coming in to for green flag pit stops. Drivers able to make it the remaining race distance with out needing another pit stop from here.
Race leader Foster would pit at the end of 62 re-joining the race in 5th position. Lachlan Urquijo being the last of the leading cars to pit on lap 65. Lap 76 would see the 2nd caution of the race come out as Brett Campbell would blow an engine coming off turn 2 and being unable to make it back to the pits.
Unsurprisingly all the leaders would come into pit lane and grab fresh tires. Michelmore managing to come out in front of teammate Gallagher from the pits for 2nd. Cars coming out of the pits 2 by 2 showing how close the battle was.
A great restart on lap 81 would count for nought as Williams who had been having a strong run all night would make contact with the wall on the exit of turn 2 sending him spinning down the track into Rueben Phelps and spinning both cars out to trigger the caution.
On lap 86 the drivers would hear the voices say green, green, green again and would see Foster Carry On with the lead and bring it home to get the race win.
