2022 S3 Round 6 Thunder Results
Southern hospitality welcomes Jaeger into the winners circle at Dega!!
Round 6 of the ANZCAR Thunder Series 3 2022 saw the series head to the 2.5 Mile 4 KM long Super Speedway Talladega!!
Qualifying would see Ryan Jones start from pole position with the rapidly improving Noddy Tompkins joining him on the front row. Hamish Gallagher, Dave Douglas would make up row 2 and the returning Joshua Carroll Warden starting from 5th.
In the early run Noddy Tompkins would use a push from Dave Douglas in the outside line to drop down in front of the inside line. In response Jones would jump up to the outside to lead the line.
A caution would calm things for a few laps before the next restart a rinse and repeat of Jones leading the inside line and Tompkins the outside. This time the Simbois drivers of Gary Wellman and Aaron Dillon would open a third line for racing at the front.
Quietly moving their way up the pack to the front would be Jake Moloney starting 29th and the Mad Dog Steve Hoppitt starting 22nd.
Lap 19 would see 3 cars fighting for the same real estate on track and lead to Luke Georgeson going on a wild tumbling ride over the pack of cars following. This caution seeing the bulk of the field pitting for at least fuel and for some driver’s tires. Tire life once again not an issue on a Super Speedway. Drivers would be able to make it the full race distance from here on 1 more pit stop.
For this restart Phil Bissett driving the “join the fight to end breast cancer” livery car would lead off the inside line and Jones would lead the outside after jumping Tompkins in the pits.
Lap 52 would see green flag pit stops starting and we would see several drivers pick up penalties for speeding on pit road or unsafe entries including Jones and Gallagher.
Once pit stops were done and the order had resettled it would be the no.8 of Jamie Nankervis in the lead with Michael Scurlock lined up behind him and Raymond Jaeger next in line working well together. JCW would use a push from the Lachlan Urquijo to take the lead and top to the inside. However, this wouldn’t last long as the outside line would get a big run that would allow Urquijo and Matthew Raymond to drop down in front of JCW.
Once Tompkins was able to drop down in the front of the inside line things would settle down for a time with the outside line not able to build any runs for a few laps.
A last lap tangle in the front pack would take away the chance of victory for Tompkins, JCW, Nankervis, Bissett and Steven Williams but would open the door for Jaeger, Scurlock and Urquijo.
But it would be Jaeger grabbing the win with Scurlock expertly lined up behind for the push to the finish line. The margin of victory 0.054 of a second with 3rd place finishing 0.060 of a second behind.
Way too much action going on in this race to describe it all here with 11 race leaders and 20 lead changes. Best to check out the race replay.
