2022 S3 Round 4 Thunder Results
Douglas Thunders around the valley to get the win.
“Thunder Valley” "The Last Great Colosseum" "The World's Fastest Half-Mile" "The Bullring" or whatever you want to call it, Its Bristol Baby!! Round 4 of the ANZCAR Thunder Series 3 2022 would head to Bristol for a 150-lap race.
Pole position would go to Josh Michelmore who was looking to try and maximize his points haul for the championship contention with Hamish Gallagher having a night off having travelled overseas.
Steven Williams would start 2nd with Michael Scurlock 3rd, Ruben Phelps 4th, Edward Foster 5th and Lachlan Urquijo rounding out the top 3 rows in 6th position.
Williams would waste no time using the high line start to his advantage to take the lead from Michelmore. Scurlock would use the low line to challenge for the lead racing side by side for over 10 laps before having to settle back in behind Williams.
Mirko Dautanec starting from the back would make a charge up the field whilst Urquijo would get out of shape coming out of turn 2 connecting with the wall and dropping down the order.
Lap 30 would see a shocking net code incident led to Williams hitting the wall and taking enough damage to the car to park it for the night. A real shame as Williams was having a strong run and looking for a good finish.
Foster and Michelmore were taking care of their tires and fuel with the knowledge they were going to no stop this race if it continued to go green. Dave Douglas was now quietly working his way up into the top 3 as Scurlock would be paying the price for running low. His tires dropping off somewhat. This would lead to heavy contact with the outside wall and the car being parked for the night.
Further back in the field the After Dark drivers Tom Neil and Luke Georgeson would be having nice runs looking after their tires and car well. Noddy Tompkins would be having a good run so far making his way up from 15th to end up finishing 10th.
Douglas would start to drop off the pace set by Foster and Michelmore and decided on lap 82 to roll the dice and come into the pits for a fresh set of tires. This would also see the rest of the field all pit to get fresh tires with only Foster and Michelmore opting for the no pit stop strategy. From here the mission for the fresh tire cars was simple. Use the over 1 second faster a lap speed to get back the 2 laps lost pitting and then make up a 3rd lap to challenge for the lead and hope like crazy the race stayed green flag running.
On lap 87 Douglas got one of those laps back. On lap 101 he got another lap back then on lap 122 he was able to get by an ailing Michelmore for 2nd and on lap 131 he was able to pass Foster for the lead of the race. Foster not having anything left in the tires to fight too much about it. Matthew Raymond, Phelps, and tom Neil were also making the most of their fresh tires all get back onto the lead lap and passing Michelmore as well and just quietly working his way into a top 10 finishing spot Brad Fenly having another solid run.
At the end of the race Douglas was able to build a 4.2 second victory margin to Foster who did a good job of keeping his race pace up despite not pitting for fresh tires.
